Course Description

Grief is a universal process with unique and holistic features for each griever. The pandemic has emphasized our culture’s need to have more conversations about death, dying and loss. This course will explore grief, its common manifestations and how we can cope in a time where common strategies are not possible. It also takes a special look at elements of grief from the African American perspective, highlighting how social inequities frame and impact African American grief.    

This course includes a recorded presentation by Rashida Sanchez, MA, FT. Rashida currently works in the role of bereavement counselor at Calvary Hospital/Hospice.  She facilitates bereavement groups for children, teens and adults who are processing a variety of deaths.  She is not only passionate about working with her clients but also interested in how bereavement and grief can be viewed through the lens of social justice.  She looks forward to contributing to the field of death and dying, exploring topics that aid in the understanding of grief in children and adolescents, immigrant populations, and faith communities.

Learning Objectives:

After completing the course, participants will be able to:

• Explain what grief is and the different ways it may be experienced.
• Describe how race-based trauma may impact grief.
• Identify specific helpful approaches when providing grief counseling to African American communities.

Completion of this course counts as 1.5 contact hours for licensed NY social workers. 

Course participation involves watching a recorded presentation and completing a quiz. You must receive a score of at least 80% to pass the course, but may retake the quiz as needed. A certificate of completion will automatically be issued after completion of the course.
